How to Pitch a Story to
Do you have a story that perfectly captures the essence of black fatherhood? At Black Dad Unfiltered, we're always looking for compelling narratives that spotlight the transformative power of black fathers in shaping families, communities, and broader societal norms. Whether you're an experienced journalist, an early-career reporter, or someone who tells stories through other mediums like print or film, we welcome your pitches. If you have an inspiring story, we're here to guide you through the storytelling process
Here are some guidelines for potential contributors:
- We seek stories that evoke wonder and shed light on the often-overlooked aspects of black fatherhood and its impact on the community and the world.
- We love narratives that make our audience recognize and appreciate elements of black fatherhood they might never have considered before. We generally avoid stories that simply highlight cool initiatives or projects (what we might call "Guy With A Project" stories). Instead, we focus on stories that unveil the deep and meaningful impact of black fathers.
- We appreciate stories that can also serve as a vehicle to explore significant cultural or historical contexts, illuminating the profound influence of black fatherhood over time and across different spheres of life
- Our primary focus is on stories created by human experiences and interactions, particularly those that intersect with societal and cultural themes. We're interested in the narrative of empowerment, challenge, and achievement that black fathers often embody.
When pitching, please provide a clear narrative arc: start with an engaging opening, outline the main characters, describe how the story will develop, and specify the major themes and insights your story will explore. While these elements might evolve during the editorial process, a well-structured initial pitch reflects how effectively the story can be told
Keep your pitches concise, ideally to a page or less. Take a look at our sample pitches for guidance on crafting a compelling proposal.
We genuinely read and consider every single pitch. If your story aligns with our mission and captures our interest, we'll reach out to discuss it further, though please allow us a response time of 2-3 weeks.
If you’re ready to share a story that highlights the impact and importance of black fatherhood, submit your pitch to us using our submission form. We're excited to hear from you and potentially share your story with our global audience, contributing to the appreciation and understanding of black fathers everywhere.
